Tenses

Present Tense


Simple Present

Subject + Verb Present + object (ex she eats bread )


Expresses a habit or often repeated action 

Expresses general truths or facts that are timeless


Ex:

She goes to work everyday

Snow falls in the december in Manali


Present Continous form

Subject + am/is/are + verb present+ ing+object (Ex: She is eating bread )

Action that is occuring right now

Action that is occuring in the present but is temporary

Action happening in a period around the time of speaking 

Ex:

She is typing a paper for her class .

He can't talk .He is fixing the sink right now .

John is living in Modesto, but he might move soon.

We are going to the beach tomorrow 


The Present Perfect form

Subject+has/have+verb particlpe+Object [she has eaten bread]

An event that began in the past and continues upto present 

An event that was completed in the past , but the specific time of the event is not important .

Action in the past that has a result now .

Example : He has lived in modesto for two years .

I have seen that movie before .

I lost my key .

I missed my bus 


Persent Perfect continous form

Subject + have/has + verb + ing + object [she has been eating bread since noon]

The duration of an action that  begin in the past and continues into the present .

Events that have been in progress recently and are rather temporary.

Activity that has recently stopped or just stopped .

Activity that is still happening 


Examples:

He has been studying grammar for an hour .

She has been living in taiwan for the last two months, but she plans to move soon.

It has been raining 

It has been raining for two hours .


Past Tense


Simple Past:

Subject + Verb past + Object [ex: she ate bread ]

Completed events

Past states (liked,knew)

Habitual (repeated) events in the past


I walked to school yesterday

I realized it was the day before christmas break

I saw a movie every weekend when i was a teenager 


Past progressive tense

Subject + was/were +  verb + ing +object [she was eating bread]


Action that was ongoing at one point in time 

often used with the simple past .


I was cooking dinner when the phone rang ,

They were eating dinner when the neighbours stopped by for a visit .


The Past perfect tense

Subject + had + verb particple + object [ex: she had eaten bread before she fell sick]


An event that occured before another event in the past .


I had lived there for five years before we hosted a holiday dinner .

The titanic had received many warnings before it hit the iceburg .


Past Perfect continous

Subject + had + been + verb +ing +object [Ex: she had been eating bread before she fell sick]


Action that started in the past and continued up to another action ,event ot time in the past .

She had beed driving around the city for three hours before she finally found right office .

Mike wanted to sit down because he had been standing all day at work ,


Future Tense


Simple futute form


Subject + am/is/are + going to + verb + object [ ex: She is going to eat bread ]

Subject + will + verb + object [Ex : She will eat bread ]


She will become famous soon

My friend will not marry that man.

Will it rain tomorrow ?


Going to 


It is going to rain tomorrow .


The future continous form

Subject + will be + verb +ing +Object [Ex: she will be eating bread at lunch time ]


An event or action that will occure over a period of time at a specific point in the future .


I will be teaching english at 10 am tomorrow .

The will be moving their furniture out of the house by the time you arrive tomorrow .

I will be watching tv when she arrives tonight .


The future perfect fom


Subject + will have + verb participle + Object [Ex: She will have eaten bread by the time new bread is baked ]


An event or action that will be completed before another event or time in the future .

We will have finished the exam by the time class ends tomorrow .

Sam is probably going to have completed the proposal by the time he leaves his afternoon.


The future perfect continous form

Subject + will have been + verb +ing +Object [Ex she has been eating bread for two hours 

by the time she feels full.


Describes an action that has been in progress for a duration of time before another event or time in the future .


The will have been talking for over an hour by the time thomas arrives .

She is going to have been working at that company for three years when it finally closes .

James will have been teaching at the university for more than a year by the time he leaves for asia .
